Additional Information Colonel Smellie was a distinguished nursing sister in the First World War who was 'Mentioned in Despatches.'* She was Matron-in-Chief in the Canadian Medical Army Corps during the Second World War. In 1941, she took a leave of four months to supervise the organization of the Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWAC). She was the first Canadian woman to be promoted to the rank of colonel.
